In 1 Peter 5:5-6, we are reminded that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. This passage highlights the importance of humility in our relationship with God and others.

The Dangers of Pride

Pride is an attitude of independence from God, an excessive sense of self-importance, and a lack of recognition of our limitations and dependence on others or God (Proverbs 11:2, 15:33, 18:12). Pride is the complete anti-God state of mind, leading to other sins (CS Lewis, Mere Christianity). It is about self-glory, self-importance, and self-will, edging God out (E.G.O.).

Manifestation of Pride

Pride manifests in various ways, including:

  • Difficulty in teaching and correction
  • Prayerlessness
  • Willingness to break relationships
  • Ungratefulness
  • Blindness to one’s own sin

God’s Resistance

God’s resistance is not always punitive but often corrective, aiming to bring the proud back to humility and dependence on Him (Hebrews 12:6). Those whom the Lord loves, He chastises (Proverbs 6:16-19, 16:5).

God’s Grace

God’s grace is unmerited favor, a gift from God, not earned by our works or deserving (Ephesians 2:8). We have an unlimited supply of grace in God through Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 12:9). However, God gives this grace to the humble (1 Peter 5:5).

Humility

Humility is not thinking less of oneself but thinking less of oneself (Jeremiah 9:24). It is being confident without being cocky. Jesus exemplified humility by washing His disciples’ feet (John 13:3-5) and emptying Himself to become a servant (Philippians 2:5-11).

Conclusion

In conclusion, God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. May we clothe ourselves with humility, recognizing our limitations and dependence on God, and receive His unmerited favor and grace.
